A Digital Memorial

They Shall Grow
Not Old

Honouring the Fallen of St Joseph's Parish, Dundee

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

About This Project

St Joseph's Church in Dundee bears a memorial outside its walls listing the names of parishioners who fell in the First World War. These were men from our community, many of them very young, who served in regiments such as the Highland Light Infantry, the Royal Scots, the Black Watch, the Cameron Highlanders, and the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Some travelled as far as Iraq and Belgium; most fell in France. Their ages, where known, are recorded alongside their service numbers, regiments, and the cemeteries where they rest.

In 2024, a project was undertaken to honour these men. Through painstaking research of war pension records, death registers, regimental archives, and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, a detailed memorial film was created. Each soldier was given a dedicated tribute: their name, service details, and, where available, a photograph and supporting documents. The film was presented to the congregation, who recognised that this was a fitting tribute to the fallen.

The congregation expressed a wish to extend this work to the men and women who fell in the Second World War and other conflicts. Because no memorial plaque exists for WWII, that research will be considerably more challenging. This website was created to centralise the archive in a single, permanent, publicly accessible location, and to provide a foundation that other parishes and churches might use to honour their own fallen.
